BAMBA BAR
Design, Interiors & Decor
2024
Mood-Material Board
The design of the bar is inspired by the idea of Pandora’s Box, combined with references to Swahili architecture, local materials, and the integration of existing elements. It seeks to evoke a coastal atmosphere within an urban context, creating a balance between openness and intimacy. Rooted in the rich cultural layers of Swahili architecture — shaped by Arab, Persian, and African influences — the project reflects a history of migrations and exchanges through its spatial language.
The construction approach draws from traditional techniques, particularly in the use of wood, the creation of niches and perforated elements, and the incorporation of mosaics such as zellige. Beige lime plaster and subtle Islamic references contribute to a soft, textured materiality. Existing bar structures are preserved and reinterpreted, allowing the design to transform the space while maintaining continuity with its original character.
Careful attention is given to preserving existing vegetation, reinforcing a dialogue between architecture and its environment, and extending a connection to tropical landscapes. The project is developed in close collaboration with local actors, embracing shared knowledge and craftsmanship, and continues to evolve as part of an ongoing construction process.
